Make Human is a free open source figure modelling app similar to, but not as developed and with less features than Poser. At the moment there doesn't seem to be a direct way to get these models into SU but the development of the app is pretty swift and the current release is pretty slick. Currently you can export as Collada or OBJ.

Well Jon, if it exports obj files, you can try Jim's Obj Importer plugin.
It says "It works sometimes, but not all the time..."

I've managed to get them in ok, but you have to remember two things:
A) They are nude...all right if you want some pool people, you can paint some pants on them.
B) They are huge. Unlike Poser, you can't select which bits to export, you get the whole thing...and it's all connected, so no easy select/delete...and they even have cusps on their teeth. That's how detailed they are.

I was thinking.....Can the 'joint-push pull' tool be used to extrude a part of the body and thus creating clothing?
I mean for instance, 'joint extrude' the torso to make a sweater etcetera....the only thing that bothers me that it is dificult to select the needed parts for that. (That's why I posed the question on intersecting and getting groups automatically, in the how-to section)
By the way,
These images were made with Sketchup (+render engine) + Makehuman, which I find a super piece of software. This humanmaker is in my top 5 list of 'easy to use' software.

Sketchup itself is probably in that list as well. -
As I expected, CjPhilips 'JointPushpull' ruby works quite well to make clothes for MakeHuman models.
I am not a good organic modeler, I just 'joint-pushpulled' the torso and a part of the head.
It needs more modeling but I guess results can be good...
The only hassle is the tedious way to select the triangles to extrude.
Sketchup could use more selection options (soft selection etc...) to get a better workflow imho. -
I ran an MH model through Viz Up to reduce it, it worked well but I only have the demo so couldn't save it. I used Milkshape to reduce it a bit, it started to get mangled up at less than 70%. I've just read though that you can reduce MH models very well with Blender's decimator tool, I might try this and post the result.
Clothes wise, bring back the bodystocking.
