Team SU, Please help....
-
Hi Tom, sorry I missed this yesterday! I'm not completely familiar with this problem, but what I can do is make sure that folks see this thread and see if we can get you some answers.
Csaba is right...with it being a weekend (and the snow being so good this season!) the team is out and about till Monday morning.
I'll make sure we look into this and get you what information we have.
In the meantime, I think it would be best to use your workaround until we have some solid information to work off of.
I wish I could be more help at the moment, but we'll do what we can as soon as possible.

Okay, first of all: Craig, Gai, thanks...but the only thing I was thinking when I made my bump post (besides the hopeful bump) was that there had been 30 views of my question without response, quite unusual for this bunch, so figured I'd stumbled into another unsolveable :`) (But gotta say I'm surprised SU online tech support isn't 24/7...still haven't heard from them?)
Now: CCleaner didn't work; so I again restored back to the day I brought my baby home, then cleaned the disk, dumped all restore points (probably stupid), restarted, then loaded and tried CCleaner again. Restarted and loaded SU5...didn't work.
But for some reason a thought hit me (probably because the sky was turning brown in 5 instead of the black as in 6...and because the ground is off on the first screen of 5 and on and brown in 6) to try turning on the ground. The symptom stopped...? Set the ground color to white (my preference with an SU4 colored sky on)...still no stupid! Turned the ground off...symptom back?
So I'm at a loss! Since my problem with the WgaTray.exe tying up full processor capacity until I manually turn it off is gone (this showed up at the same time I noticed the black skys, the time of the intellipoint installation)...it now shuts off automatically after a couple seconds like it's supposed to, I'm thinking I may be OK? But such a symptom in SU should probably be addressed as much as I can? What to do, what to do!?!
Since I'm a worry-wart at heart, I'm thinking peace of mind requires me to reformat (I will have this done for me) and start over just to know if this is a problem with SU and some other item.
Whadaya'll think? Any of you guys and gals with quadro cards have a similar problem not using a ground?
-
Tom,
I thought it was just me. On my work desktop I have SU lock up on me, kind of. It goes completely black but I can still see the toolbars. It sits like that for a few minutes and then all is ok again. I thought it was an autosave problem but then it started doing it within minutes of the time before. All of this started after buying a new mouse and also installing the drivers for a microsoft comfort mouse 3000 (intelimouse 6.1 I think). That machine is running a quadro fx 5600. I have not been able to get it to stop either. Weird thing though is I am also running a dell M90 laptop and installed the drivers for the mouse on that as well and have not had an issue yet and that laptop runs a quadro card as well. Not sure what to do because I am close to putting my fist through the LCD at work after about a half an hour of the black screens. Once I get into work on monday I will do a screen capture of the black screen and post it here.

Scott, I am so sorry to hear you are having the same trouble...
...and so relieved to think my trials aren't the vicious vendetta of vigilante spirits brought on by, possibly, the past prayer of some vengeful vixen.
I was getting the all black workspace sometimes too, but it didn't last more than a few seconds (just long enough to freak me out!)...?
-
Tom,
Yes the blackscreen does not last long but can really get on ones nerves after a bit. Hopefully we can hear of a fix soon.
Scott
-
And here it is......
Is the same thing your seeing tom?
Scott
-
Scott, yes...but not anymore, thankgod. (Have you tried turning on the ground?) And, yeah, soon would be good: my worry brain this morning is screaming "feed me, feed me".
-
Tom,
Go to task manager and end process "ipoint". I did that and it has yet to give me the balck screen. Of course now I can not use the zoom function on the mouse but for now I am fine with that.
Scott
-
Oh Scott...iPoint is dead and gone now on my machine (along with all I had installed since I brought the 'chine home :~( I just can't be sure if the ground/sky thing in SU is caused by a left behind hunk of it's rotting corpse or something else to be concerned by...google?
Surely there is a wheel workaround without iPoint...? I'm not savy enough to suggest, but I know on the road I have used a microsoft mouse on my laptop with it's logitech software and was able to use the scroll wheel.
-
Tom,
I can use the scroll wheel but this mouse has a side button that zooms a small window that you can drag around the screen. While it is a cool little feature I still not not use it. I have to say that once shutting down ipoint I have not had a black screen yet.

UPDATE!
Finally got a response from SU tech support about an hour ago asking me to turn off hardware acceleration (first in SU, failing that then at the global level)...and report back findings.
Turning it off in SU worked. Just to see I turned off hardware acceleration thru the control panel and got a plaintive cry from nvidia: "why'd you fire me, won't you take me back...do it this way, please" :~(
Sent same info (and the "turn on ground" fix) back to tech support: some guy named "The Google Team". Will report here when I hear more (hope it doesn't take another 3 days). I certainly hope the suggested fix isn't already explained...that would be a bummer for SO many reasons!
-
Craig (et al), you find out anything that can help me...still nothing more from tech support?
-
Hi Tom, I'm sorry for not responding with any new info...I've been extremely task saturated and honestly didn't do enough follow up.
I will recheck my notes and get some information to you tomorrow.
One question: have you tried unplugging from all online sources and networks (including wireless), then un-licensing and re-licensing SketchUp? This is worth a try.
I'll let you know what else to do after rechecking my notes.
Thanks for your patience,
- CraigD
-
Craig...yes I did, to no avail (see above). Looking forward to your answer, thanks.
-
BTW...what "extras" does SU install if the web is available to it when installed?

Update
Heard from SU tech support a couple of minutes ago, so here's the email exchange in case it helps: Scott (PRSS if you're reading this thread) and/or anybody else that might have an idea triggered by it:
%(#0080BF)[> Hi Tom,
Thank you for your reply. We apologize for the delayed response. Since
disabling hardware acceleration stopped the sky and shadows from flashing
black, we can conclude that there's a conflict with the graphics card
driver or the card itself. You may consider updating the drivers for the
video card:http://sketchup.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=36254
We investigated further on our end, and we didn't locate any fixes that we
released that correct incompatibilities with Intellipoint software.
However, regarding your hardware acceleration settings, there may be
another issue with the NVIDIA settings that may resolve the issue:- Right-click on the Desktop and choose "Properties."
- Click the "Settings" tab.
- Click the "Quadro FX1700" tab.
- Click "Start the NVIDIA Control Panel."
- Click "3D Settings."
- Click "Manage 3D settings."
- Please make sure that "Antialiasing - Mode" is set to
Application-controlled. - Restart the computer.
- Open SketchUp, and click "Window" > "Preferences" > "OpenGL."
- Choose a capability that has a "0x" antialias setting.
Thanks for your ongoing assistance.
Regards,
The Google Team]%(#800080)[Hey Goggle Team...and thanks:
I have had the latest nvidia drivers from day one.
I was using the "Autocad" preset with Vertical Sync set to "Force Off"...so
went back to the base settings (application controls all including
antialiasing) per your instructions: solid black turned to middle
gray...but same issue symptoms remained. Turned vertical sync back to
"force off" (really helps reaction time and speed on highpoly models) and
black returned.Turned on the ground in both cases above and issue stopped...? Isn't this
wierd behavior? A wierd "fix"...?For my own piece of mind (knowing the intellipoint software caused some
other problems as well and most likely still lurks in the shadows) I am
going ahead with the reformat and reinstall. I will let you know the status
of this issue when I get the machine back. I would also like your input on
the best nvidia settings for SU so I can set up my own profile and move
ahead with confidence, thanks.Best, Tom.]

Subsequent email from Google:
%(#0040FF)[Hi Tom,
There are two more settings in the NVIDIA control panel that we suggest
checking. In the same "Manage 3D Settings" window, please ensure that
"Antialiaing - Gamma correction" is set to "On," and "Anisotropic
filtering" is set to "Application-controlled."Regards,
The Google Team] -
Tom,
Sorry if someone else suggested this already, but did you manually delete the Intellipoint key from the registry (run: regedit) after uninstalling? I've found more and more often that registry keys are left behind after supposedly uninstalling progs causing all sorts of problems.
Disclaimer: Of course, messing around with the registry always carries risks!
-
I too have been plagued by the black screen just recently.
Downloaded new drivers and followed all the advice from google as above to no avail.
Then scotts post reminded me that Id installed a new m/soft mouse months ago.The task manager showed that ipoint loaded at start up, I've disabled it and http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/posting.php?mode=reply&f=72&t=5418#
voila! No change to mouse behaviour either.
Thanks, and thank god for the forum.
