NLite--free Windows XP installation modifier
-
Now that Windows XP's dotage has been extended for another two years (thanks to people like me, with my silly Asus Eee PC), perhaps other people might find this free tool useful:
http://www.nliteos.com/nlite.html
It essentially allows one to create a custom installation disk for XP, with all the hard-to-remember options (default folder appearance, customized Start menu, whether or not Outlook Express gets installed, etc.) already configured into the installation, along with any updates and fixes one cares to slipstream into the mix. For individuals with limited storage space (like me with my Eee) on their computer, nLite will allow one to shave a couple of hundred MB of space off of the eventual installation by opting out of unneeded languages, drivers, games, screensavers, stupid animated dogs, etc.
Be warned, though: if you have fat fingers and mess up the nLite options you can create a completely useless XP installation as well, if you kill a dependency for something important (like USB).
You still need to have a valid original XP installation disk and a valid MS serial number too.
