The 3dvia line been available for over a year now.

The real problem with Dassault Systemes'(maker of CATIA)offering here is its complete incompatibility with any other design software outside of their stable...one of the 3D Acrobat Pro flavors will convert their particular obscure variant of XML to something usable in a CAD program or a mesh modeler, but that's about it.

The 3dvia Printscreen utility is actually pretty interesting: it will grab render meshes from any game or model (including GE)--either OpenGL- or DirectX-based--but then of course you're stuck with a model in that stupid 3DXML format unless you pony up for Adobe Acrobat 3D Pro.

There is also a suspicious tie-in with Microsoft Virtual Earth...this is the evil empire's response to the SketchUp/Google Earth nexus. The 3Dvia Virtual Earth plugin allows you to pull stuff from their virtual globe into the modeler. Unlike with SketchUp, you get the buildings and terrain with color texture.

                Dear Lewis,

                Thanks for that detailed response.

I think Google Sketchup might extend its popularity by making exporters available for all the major 3D CAD modelling packages (e.g. SolidWorks, Pro/ENGINEER, Inventor etc). Play Daassault/Microsoft at their own game.

You might ask why anyone running one of these 3D CAD programs would want to use Sketchup. Well, there is just something about Sketchup, and the way it works, that just gets the design juices flowing. I have used it to work through quite complex designs, and in a fraction of the time it would have taken me using Inventor, which is what I use for producing the final drawings. Perhaps it's the way my mind works, or doesn't work.

                Regards,
                Bob

                  Sorry Bob,
I did not pretend to be rude.
My keyboard is broken and did not felt as typing anything.

                    Dear Juan,

No problems! I really should use the Search box more often.

                    Kind regards,
                    Bob
