Waterproof USB Drive
-
I have a 2 GB Sony USB drive that I left in the pocket of my pants which I washed today (in 40 Celsius). I found the drive inside the washing machine.
Now guess what happened; I plugged it into my computer to see how it is and the computer recognized it as a new hardware (though of course it had already been installed).
Then Picasa started to scan the drive (there are images on it) and the images had a red cross onthem (not instead of them). I closed Picasa and tried to open the drive both in Total Commander and in Explorer as well but neither worked.
Oh well, I said, I could have expected that. I then unplugged and plugged in again but now it works perfectly - I can open the images and such.
Am I lucky?

i suppose your a bit lucky, but usually stuff like thats okay when it dries out, as there are no mechanical parts that can be water damaged. Next time (if there is a next time!) its best to leave the drvie to dry for a few hours before you try and use it again.

And as an added bonus... it is clean now

Yeah, definitely. I'm now thinking about putt6ings my keyboard into the washing machine. What do you guys suggest?
@remus: that iron drive looks more like a hand granade...

all the better to protect your data with.

The same thing happened to my usb drive over 4 years ago.
After drying it, it runs without any problems till today... but it's only a 128MB and i replaced it last month with a larger one.so nothing seems to change - the toughness of thumb drives and the ability of washing machines to destroy them .

Here's a nice video of a keyboard being cleaned.

Hehe... That's funny...

Some luck indeed. Pretec says thet it's drive is water, fire and bulletproof... I would not suggest testing if your bulletproof USB drive is really bulletproof.
