...on XP pro 64 bit? Is it running well?

      Thanks in advance, Tom.

not that ive tried, but i imagine you could have some problems, windows xp 64 bit was only released in 2003, so autocad is unlikely to work properly without a bit of fiddling.

          Tom,
One thing that I've learnt over the years is that a specific generation of software runs with a related generation of OS and hardware. That means that ideally one needs to try and upgrade software, OS and (to a lesser extent) hardware in the same cycle (in my case about every two years.) The hassle of trying to run older software on a new machine or OS is just not worth the time in hacking at finding a solution any more. Also any Windows maintenance update holds the danger of 'breaking' the older software.(meaning that it may introduce an incompatibility at an inopportune time, thereby rendering the older software inoperable). I recently upgraded my workstation and even with the same OS I could not get some older commercial software utilities to run on the new machine.

You may find a way for it to work but bear in mind that the software may not have been designed with this environment in mind. As a part time software developer I can tell you that it is very difficult to design software compatibility for future OS and hardware configurations. I personally still run Acad 2002 due to what I consider an unreasonable upgrade policy but have resisted using VISTA for exactly this reason.

In a nutshell I wouldn't waste the time.

i tihnk your best bet would be to consider usign virtualisation of some sort tom, ive used http://www.virtualbox.org/ before, and it work pretty well, its relatively simple to set up and works well when you get it going, the only problem i had was sharing files between the virtual machine and the real machine. this has probably been solved, though, as i as using it over a year ago.

Wow, Remus! (and way beyond my knowledge and especially my comfort level) Hopefully I won't have to resort to such on my own...interesting read though, wish I felt spry enough for such play more often, I think I'd jump on this :`)

Thanks for hanging with me on this guys...I had the image of hobbling a young thoroughbred for an aging jockey sticking in my mind's craw. But some searching for 64-bit apps this weekend I found there are precious few trained to sit my new beast...and all are well out of my stable's budget. So I guess I'll let it go and install the 32-bit XP...hoping I don't have a nag by the time the software catches up to the hardware.

                Best, Tom.
