64bit vs 32bit...

...what to do, what to do?!?
Okay, just found out my screamin' baby's maker put in a 32bit copy of XPpro instead of the 64bit to go with all the other latest stuff I bought...? Anyway, I only have 3 programs installed and configured so far so I'm wondering if I should convert now...of course I'm assuming I won't get slower if I do, I might be faster now, and will surely be when I upgrade apps as they become designed for it? Please advise...
...or at least confirm or deny the folowing:
Google says 6pro will work fine on a 64bit system as a 32bit app (though nothing about SU5).
Autodesk has not certified Autocad 2002 on a 64bit system (but says Microsoft's claim that it will work is not unfounded...more corporate CYAspeak?).
64bit operating systems are approved for the latest versions of PSP and PhotoImpact (just downloaded a trial of X3 that came with a free full Painter Essentials 3, Stu :`)
The printer I'm going to use also lists 64bit as fine.
Help, please and thank you...and best, Tom.

Apart from the making sure about the apps will function in a 64 bit environment Tom, make sure all the hardware you use (GFX card, sound card, printers, etc.) have 64 bit drivers.

Tom,
Yes I noted the latest PhotoImpact version and I guess I will just have to outlay another $50 for an upgrade Let me know how useful Painter 3 is though.. [before I lash out ]

But if I find I indeed can...should I?

Surely some among you are running 64 bit...are you pleased with it?

Tom,
The only advantage of 64 bits is that it can address larger amounts of memory (some terabytes I think). So if you don't use more than the 2...3 GB common today, there is no advantage. In theory it even runs 32-bit software a little slower than a 32-bit OS. The same happened when 8-bit (DOS) was changed into 16-bit (windows 3.1) and that into 32-bit.

Anssi, thanks...kinda what I thought I remembered from some other advice. I was just thinking better now, as long as my few programs will work now, rather than later when I have even more programs to reload...? Though I suppose by the time SU goes 64bit, XP might no longer be supported...? Who knows?!?
Thanks and best, Tom.

The last machine I built I loaded Vista 64 Ultimate on it and it ran great however I struggled to run most of my 3d apps as then (June 2007) there really wasn't enough support, so I formatted and installed 32bit instead. I believe I will wait until my next mobo upgrade to try again, by then the support should be widespread and DDR3 will be a standard for me to then splurge on the kinda RAM one would need for a 64bit to show it's true muscle.
My suggestion is to use the 32bit version for now and avoid any glitches that could occur, remember screaming fast is only great when the app supports it.

Hmm...this is intersting:

The 64-bit benchmarks show a clean pair of heels to the 32 bit...these are the types of speed gains for which you'd gladly shell out for a new 'puter. As they state: "The 2.8 GHz Mac Pro running 64-bit code is faster than the 3.2 GHz Mac Pro running 32-bit code".
MacOS X, but still intel quad-core processors being tested, so broadly comparable. (And we don't have to pay extra for a 64-bit OS...64-bit apps are another matter, though 0
