      Hi Guys,

I'm curious! I imagine the huge majority of SketchUp users use the English version even if English is not their native tongue!

From what I see SketchUp is now available in eleven languages, English, French , Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese & most recently, Polish, Brazilian, Portuguese, Russian and Dutch. I thought there was a Chinese version but it looks like there isn't ...... at least not yet!

I'm wondering if users prefer to work with the English or their native language version?

      Any comments?

      Mike

The funny thing is that I translate so many progs from English to French but curiously I use only sketchup in English! ๐Ÿ˜„

Why? I don't know, maybe because lenght of commands in letters are very more short than in French so eyes are not disturbed by the text!

And it's more easy for help somebody here to know the name of the commands! ๐Ÿ’š

The disadvantage is that I don't know the exact French commands used in the French version of SU when I am in the French section! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

No need to be ๐Ÿ˜ณ Pilou. I know how this can happen. English is the business language and more so the tech language. I think this came about simply because the US speaks English. Then again from what I read somewhere, it might well have been French!

So the French commands are longer! I wonder does this apply to other language versions?

There are even 2 Chinese versions (็น้ซ” and ็ฎ€ไฝ“) + Korean.

I stopped using the native version since switching languages always breaks all shortcuts (developers learn: never store preferences with localized strings).

Much more interesting: How many translated plugins are there?
Although Trimble SketchUp does not yet have a shared translation library or API, we have to built the ability into our plugins. Many programmers do that already, but getting translated texts is rather a matter of incident, when someone stops by and posts a translated file in a plugin's thread.
What about having a translation portal (like this) or just a repository of files to be translated all in one place. So who ever likes can systematically translate plugins, and translations would quickly become more complete and consistent.

Since there is no Hungarian version of SU, I use the English version. But most probably I'd still use the English version if there were a Hungarian version, too. Simply because the majority here uses English and explaining stuff would be hard with screenshots in Hungarian.

For similar (but the other way round) reasons I prefer the English version of programs even if there is a Hungarian version available. Like an image editor for instance. The internet is full of resources; how to blend layers and such - but mainly in English. This way it is much easier to learn something.

I like programs that allow an easy way of switching between languages. SketchUp is not programmed that way (in fact, it is one of the most annoying program from language point of view - e.g. it switches to English if your OS is English no matter what language version you install - probably some stupid, language forcing strategy inherited from Google again) so I will probably not use it in any other languages than English.

                    Gai...

                      +1

I've installed both versions (German and English) to be able to switch between the languages depending on whom I want to help...
