Puteoli - Pozzuoli, Italy - an archaeological work
-
Hi guys, i'm Cristiano from Italy, Pozzuoli.
Maybe who knows Roman Empire and Rome history, surely has heard about Pozzuoli, the main seaport of Rome, before the building of Ostia..
That's a great city, full of beautiful things, but the people here is not so much caring about them like in the past.. so i decided to make a 3d copy of these archaeological sites to preserve someway this incredible inheritance. My next step is to build an entire virtual city like Rome in 3D for Google Earth, maybe not so much detalied!
take a look at my models

Hi, Cristiano:
Welcome.
It appears you have discovered Building Maker. I was testing it out for the first time yesterday on random available selections. And watching the introductory videos and tutorials. My home town does not have the archaeological history that yours does, but, like you, I want to model it and the several bridges.
I just wish that the oblique aerials available in Bing were useful in Building Maker, but they are not the same company. -
A good body of work there Crislink well done. It's good to see sketch up getting good use in the archaeology field.

Thank you all. A very powerful option for gathering 3d's from complex shapes is photosynt's point cloud 3ds.... it's just like laser scanner but much less expensive. But is not so easy to use, you need some mesh apps and tools etc etc... I think is a very good thing for archaeology.
In my case I just used Sketchup. I started with some plans/sections and tried to match at least simplified shapes. Then I applied the textures.

Cris, indeed a nice work and great endeavour. Being a Roman (although just "provincial") archaeologist by my original trade myself, I have always marvelled the work and enthusiasm some folks invest into modelling these things.
(In fact, I would also love to do this - especially with my own home town - full time if my budget allowed)
-
I'm also interested in Puteoli at the time of the Roman Empire - especially in its hayday 1.-2. century before Ostia took over. Both archaeologically but also geologically (with the Bradyseism )
Anyway, I've been working on the marketplace - Macellum (Temple of Serapide) since the ruins still stand and models have been made of it.(Notice 1st. floor doesn't have a railing yet )
I would be very pleased if you Crislink would share your resources.
I see you've made the Temple of Augustus. How do you know it looked like that?
I can't find any archaeology describing it. Only that it was "brought to light after the burning of the cathedral in 1964". It had Corinthian columnns, but that's all I know.I also plan to make the Flavian Amphitheatre (if my skills suffice), and the grand quay (commissioned by Nero).
Also the Forum on the upper terrace, but don't now what it looked like.
