I don't think the shape of the iPhone 4 was as upward progression from the iPhone 3. It has hard edges and this is not a good feel in the hand. I understand the reason was because of the antenna they wanted to incorporate! The shape of the iPhone 5 does looks like a natural 'upward' progression from the iPhone 3 however.
