If you don't know Substance Designer it is a great tool for generating textures: http://www.allegorithmic.com/?PAGE=PRODUCTS.designer

I cleared sharing this promo on the forum with the people at Allegorithmic (it was originally emailed to me) -- here's the details:

Substance Designer is having a promotional sale until February 27th 2011 for a 50% discount (395€)

First you will need to obtain the evaluation version of Designer (http://www.allegorithmic.com/?PAGE=PRODUCTS.evaluation ) as they can only provide the discount to people who have an account on thier support site. People interested in the discount should put the code “GETMORESUBSTANCE” in the “Comments” section of the evaluation request form.

    Best,
    Jason.

BTW, I have a problem with Chrome not playing the sample videos -- just right click and chose "save as" to download them to your machine and play them from there.

Sigh... If only I had the money for it! I know what it's capable of from DallasRT's epic materials topic over the Thea forum.

(BTW Dallas has also registered here at SCF - unless it is somebody else with the exact name)

http://www.mapzoneeditor.com/ (also from Allegorithmic) is worth to look, naturally it does lack some features of Substance Designer, but cannot beat the prize.

I used to have that but simply was not able to wrap my head around it. Nothing seemed to works as shown in the examples (certainly it was my fault but apparently it is not designed for me)

This is alot more advanced than Mapzone(which is still a cool tool).

Here's a marketplace for substances made in the Substance Designer application:

              turbosquid.com

              favicon

The thing to remember here is each substance can be varied to thousands of material variations with a few moves of a slider... once you've built the substance it becomes a "on the fly" texture generator for you.

This is particularly useful in game and film texture design.

              Jason.
