At the advice of Gaieus some weeks ago, I've undocked all of my tool bars and organized them in a way that makes sense to me. Since doing this, it has been nice to actually install a new plugin and not have it ravage my toolbars and have to constantly reset everything. Everything stays right where I left it. Like most people here, I have a lot of toolbars and most of which I use frequently. The problem is that especially with undocked tool bars, they take up a lot of real estate.

Would it be possible by way of ruby to have a Toolbar Manager, in which you could show a list of all toolbars and toggle them on and off? Something similar to Martin's layer management tool.

For example, if I need to do some work with Whaat's SDS, I could toggle all toolbars off and make visible just the SDS toolbar. I've noticed that SU will remember the last position of the toolbar when it is undocked and you can turn them on and off whilst not having them rearranged.

I think ideally the manager would be very basic and include an option for each toolbar to show and hide, dock and undock. Also a global option to close and open all toolbars.

Here's a screen shot of the layout I'm using. I try and organize it in a way that keeps certain things together, such as all mesh creation and manipulation tools I keep together (SDS, sculpt, sandbox, Soapskin bubble and booltools) Not sure if it's possible, but it would be great to have an option to set up your own "subsets" and assign a category, i.e. "Mesh Manipulation Tools" and have multiple toolbars assigned that would all open at once, but I think that may be pushing it a little. Something simply would suffice.

That is pretty cool. Probably a little beyond SU capabilities.

Is it possible to access the toolbars through ruby and toggle them on and off? I'm guessing from the lack of response that it is not. Oh well, I guess if more real estate is what I need, then it's time to upgrade to a 30" monitor. ☀

I really like this idea, can't believe it hasn't been suggested before. Maybe you should post your idea here, http://productideas.appspot.com/#16/e=2191e and maybe the Google team can get something into 8

I'd prefer Google just fix the toolbar issue all together. Perhaps also implement some of the functionality of some of the rubies directly in to the program. With all the plugins to make SU what it is and the new ones in the future, some type of toolbar manager could still prove useful, even if the issues were fixed in the next release. (which could be more than a year away as they are still taking suggestions)

I've been thinking about this one.

Instead of a complicated manager and web dialog, would it be feasible to have a plugin that will simply turn off all active toolbars and then turn them back on? I'd really like to be able to pick a tool I want to model with, hit a shortcut button to hide all my toolbars, then use the same shortcut to turn them back on when I'm ready to pick another tool.

This would be a simple way to model with a clean and uncluttered environment, then pop your tools on only when you need to select another.

                  Would this be possible?
