Gimp

You can use Gimp to make seamless textures, bump maps, normal maps - everything for free! Here is the plugin for normal map -
http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/normalmap/ -
Thank you very much!
Downloaded and starting to learn the process.
I should de3finitely be much better at texture creating as most of what I need is not available any other ways. -
For free video tutorials - http://meetthegimp.org/
For portable version - http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/gimp_portable
For plugins - http://registry.gimp.org/
Just try how easy is to make seamless texture - open the image, go to Filters - Map - Make Seamless!
That is -
Thanks for these resources, too.
I haven't used Gimp for a very long time and even that only for basic image editing but I know if I want to step further even in 3D modelling (not to speak about rendering once I really have the time), I need good textures and also proper skills in post-processing.
Sigh... So much to learn
-
wow thnx!!! this is so cool
-
Thanks again for the plugin! Works beautifully!
(Now just find a project wehre I really need rendering finally!)

Extend The GIMP's functionality with scripts and Photoshop-plugins
You can extend The GIMP's functionality even more by adding scripts (Script-Fu) or Photoshop-filters to your GIMP-installation. A good resource for GIMP-scripts an tutorials is the GIMP User Group website.
For using Photoshop-plugins in GIMP the pspi.exe plugin http://www.gimp.org/~tml/gimp/win32/gimp-pspi-1.0.3.zip for Windows has been created. you install this by extracting it to your GIMP installation directory (it will place itself to the lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins folder). After a restart of GIMP the Xtns-menu of GIMP's main window got a new item called Photoshop Plug-in Settings. When you click on it you can set a path to where your Photoshop-plugins are stored. GIMP will load the filters that are found in that folder at startup. These filters are added to GIMP's Filters menu.
You can find free Photoshop-filters at FreePhotoshop.com. The Virtual Photographer-plugin is good to begin with. Not all Photoshop-plugins work with GIMP, so you should try using some of them to see whether they work fine.

Seamless Workshop plug-in - Seamless Workshop is a freeware Adobe Photoshop compatible plug-in filter. It composes seamless tile from any image. Also, a "surrealistic modification" of a picture can be produced. It is a powerful tool for texture creators, and a helpful toy for graphic designers. An advanced tileable algorithm is used. The unique 'Seamless Blur' effect can be useful for any available tileable pattern

A major thank you for this thread. I downloaded gimp and am impressed--it's far superior and much more polished under Vista than the release I tried a couple of years ago on Mac.
The "make seamless" filter works pretty well, but I am eager to try out the adobe filter too. I wonder if the Nvidia normal map plugin will work? I'll give it a try too.

The Seamless Workshop plug-in works very well and gives you more options and control. The normal map plugin is similar to Nvidia plugin, but if you make it work let us know. Watch the free video tutorials at the beginning of this post - they are very helpful and practical. Photoshop is wonderful program but 80% of the people hardly know and use 20% of its power. I posted a link to another very useful program that i'm using in conduction with Gimp when making textures - TileViewer. I copy and paste the textures in the Tileviewer to see the effect before saving.
