Laptop HD question

Computer question
I have a Dell laptop with an 80 gigs (gs) HD, SATA. I wish to upgrade the drive to a 320 gs HD, SATA. I know there are kits that you can buy that supply a case, cable and software, and the minimal advertising directions, make it sound oh, so easy. However, my question is, if I image my 80 gs HD to the 320 gs HD, do I get a 80 gs copy on the new drive, with the extra 240 gs not useable or does the image take into account the extra space, and I have my 80 gs of info on a 320 gs just taking up 80 gs of space with the extra 240 useable.
Right now I have 24 gs on drive C:, with the rest on D:, I wish to end up with 100 gs for drive
and 220 on drive D.Thanks in advance
Ken
