SU Running on Linux Ubuntu 8.10
-
Hi All
I am looking for some help getting SU to work on Ubuntu 8.1 (Linux OP). I have installed Wine and can get SU to open. All the tools are there and the tutorials run, but the work area is mostly black with some lines running diagonaly in a random fashion. I am new to Linux and am in the process of moving from Vista because it has given me so many problems, but I am no computer or SU expert. I am not sure if the problem is with Linux or SU set up. Can anyone help me.

Hi Paul,
I'm not aLinux usermyself but there was an interesting discussion about Linux running SU here:

The WINE team are keen to help but they say they aren't getting enough feedback from SU/Linux users.

This brings up a good point. If you are a Linux user and would like to see better support for SU on Linux platform, make your voice heard. Speak Up, Speak Out. Squeaky wheels get grease.
You must let SU know you are out there, tell you *nix friends about SU. When the cries are loud enough they WILL listen.
I would love to have SU on Linux, and i don't even use my Linux machine that much. But this would be more reason for me to leave MS forever.
I am tired of giving my good money to MS to only get punched in the face Tell me why you can't improve this software a little MS? Only getting a text editor with one undo, a piss poor painting program, there exist better free versions!!!!
This is what i think about your products, MS, </2pesos>

From past discussions on SCF that SU developers have contributed to and having read post about this on other forums, it looks fairly certain that Google have no plans to release a native linux version of SU. So getting SU to run properly in Wine or finding the most suitable Linux distribution is the best option.
I think the problem is there doesn't seem to be many people out there with sufficient knowledge of Linux plus a serious interest in SU (with the exception of SCF member Lewis Wadsworth). Also, as the Linux community favour free open-source software such as Blender there is a general disregard for proprietry apps such as SU.
Unfortunately I am just a linux novice dabbler, but would like to see this resolved. Any feedback that Wine get about Su problems on Linux is apparently useful.

You right, but there is a misconception about SU. Blender and SU are NOT the same. They are like two sides of the modeling mountian.
Have you ever tried to create simple architecural model in Blender? Not very easy was it? I have tried again and again to create such things in Blender to no avail
Likewise have you every tried to create your favorite monsters face in SU, and did you look like after 6 hours of wasted time?
These two softwares are great complements to one another. SU needs Blender as much as Blender need SU(for how long remains to be seen).

I'm under no misconception, I know Blender is a totally diferent app to SU. What I mean is, within the linux community there is a widespread predisposition to only using free open source software regardless of whether it is the most efficient option.
