I have never had a splat yet (touch wood) and I use it extensively.

I think ive managed to crash it a few times, but in general it is a very stable plugin. The issues smustard mentions are very specific really, and its pretty easy to remember to save your work before trying them, or to just avoid doing it at all.

To answer your original question, i think there is a free version of subd and smooth, although it is a lot less refined than whaats version. It is also a lot more buggy and cant handle many different sorts of geometry. Im not sure if it's still avaiable, but it is mentioned here: http://sketchuptips.blogspot.com/2008/03/plugin-catmull-clark-subdivision-for.html So you might have some luck contacting the author of the blog to see if he's got a copy.

I did a quick search of the old HDD and it turns out ive got a copy. Bear in mind my original warning, its not a very stable version.

You will also need to change the extension to .rbs once youve downloaded it.

p.s. whaats plugin is certainly worth the dosh, you wont regret it.

I think this script requires the file above, plus another. If you get it from the website, they give you both. So here is the link to smustard's free version from their website. They still offer it:

                  favicon

                  Chris

Once youve put the files in your plugins folder, you just select the geometry you want to subd and smooth then go tools->catmull clark subdivision.

what i did is, 1 put the plugins in my plugins folder, 2 create a box, and pull it up into a 3d cube, 3 select all, then go to tools, and catmull clark, when i do this, these three little dots appear, very small dots, but nothing else happens?

Hmmm, thats strange. Is that with the plugin downloaded form smustard?

If it is my only guess is that theres something strange going on with the ruby itself.

yeah, the one from smustard. a little dot appears, VERY small, one on each face, of say a cube, but nothing happens after that.

Just did a quick test on my machine, i forgot that the script doesnt delete the original geometry, so what your seeing is just the new shape poking out from inside the old geometry. Delete the original shape and youll be left with your subdivided shape.
