        Already noted here:

It's also been already noted that it is not terribly useful (outside of certain Dinosaur modelers) unless you are capable of writing a plugin for SU. And you really must have a modern NVidia card.

Is this not a plugin for Max and Maya only?

It's a renderer, like Mental Ray or VRay but leveraging NVidia hardware.

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelato_%28software%29

There is a way of using this with Blender...someone wrote their own plugin, which seems to be the general requirement for anything outside of those two. There has been a certain amount of whining about this piece of software...apparently it is a more restrictive replacement for some earlier NVidia renderer (BMRT) that was much beloved by the Open Source crowd.

I don't remember where I read it but it seems this release is their last. nVIDIA is going to focus on their newest acquisition, merging the code-base from Gelato into what was formerly mental images' mental ray , which by the way is the rendering engine inside some of Autodesk's products, including 3ds max, AutoCAD and, as of recently, Revit...

Very interesting - any one old enough to remember "Laugh In" πŸ˜‰

              Cheers,

Ah, so this thing is no longer under development, then...they're gutting it and moving the good bits to something else, and that's why it's free.

While on the NVidia subject FYI they have just released new drivers for my 7 series but it appears it applies to 8 and 9 series as well.

                    Hi anibody

I am new here and have the question if it is possible to use gelato for sketchup. I use Kerkythea for making good pictures but the rendertimes are amazing! Is there a way to use gelato instead? Or another faster GI Renderer? I am not a real freak, so it has to be easy to understand πŸ€“

                      Hi Juju

Thanks for answering. I got no Email about your answer, normaly i get some if somebody wright an answer to a posting (in other forums), so sorry for my late answering. I know about the blender but i will not try because i think i will never understand blender 😒 I like sketchup very much and i will make perfect rendering somehow. I guess i will try moore with Kerkythea, i found out that it is possible to make a small network with it, so i can use many PC's and this will make rendertimes more less! I am in the google sketchup forum to, is there a difference between google sketchup and just sketchup?

I saw now that i have to select "Notify me when a replay is posted"!

Hi Zacchia, welcome to the SCF!

Not to my knowledge. However I understand there is an export script written for Blender to Gelato can be used for rendering.

What I would like to see is more graphics (read SketchUp and the rendering apps) applications making use nVidia's CUDA (C++ environment) or whatever it is that ATi uses to program their GPU's.

Zacchia, I wasn't saying that you should learn Blender, merely use it as part of the workflow if you want to use Gelato as the render application. SketchUp model > export to Blender (OBJ file format) > import OBJ file into Blender, run the Gelato export script in Blender > render in Gelato. Do you see what I'm getting at?

There are plenty of rendering software out there, other free version you could look at is Indigo and PovRAY. Podium also has a free version (with minor limitations), but it is quite simple to use and doesn't take long to learn or render.

SketchUP was bought be Google not too long ago, thus SketchUp and Google SketchUp is the same thing, unless you refer to versions 5 or earlier of SketchUp, then (by definition only) they differ.

I'm glad to see you got the notification thing sorted.

                            Hi Juju

Thanks for all. Export script in Blender? I have already readed about it but i do not know what this mean. Indigo and PovRay seams to bee programs without graphic surface where you have to give device with wrighting it, to heavy for me. Maeby you can explane to me the thing with Blender again. Do you think that anyway it is possible to get high quality pictures with gelato?

I have found blenderphyton.sy on internet and i could intall it and beginn to use. The blender console tells me: XML config file xml not found, will use default settings. What does this means???

What does this have to do with Gelato? Some kind of cross platform converter?

Sorry, of corse it has nothing to do with it. I guess i let it be with gelato because i have studied a lot now Kerkythea and i can handel it. So it is O.K for me. Good Time to South Africa 😎
