Hanging an air handler
-
My air handler in my air conditioning unit dumped a ton of condensation water in my ceiling which is is now ruined. This is serious stuff here in Arizona as it gets up to 117 degrees F.
The HVAC guys use a perforated steel tape to hang the units, but when they are doing retrofits to it is totally different than an install before the roof goes on. There is no room for full size humans and the temps get to the high 100s so getting out alive is more important than doing a good job.
The unit has a condensation drain and there is an overflow drain that also has to be tilted toward it own overflow hole. I want to use a threaded rod to hang the units but I cant find the right construction hardware to do the job.
Have any of you seen something like the attached sketchup drawing that would allow me to join a threaded rod to the space inside a truss? They should not be hard for me to make myself, but I would rather buy than make.

Dear Roger,
I think your quickest route would be to find your nearest sheet metal worker. This is something that could be turned out very quickly with the right equipment (guillotine, bender, pillar drill etc). I imagine that 1/8" mild steel would be strong enough. It depends on the weight at the end of the stud. You could also use two pieces of L-section mild steel channel, using the stud + nuts to clamp the parts together at the correct spacing. Personally, I would make one call to a sheet metal work and order up what I need unless, of course, you have the stock materials to hand.
Regards,
Bob
