      I was just messing around trying to put roads onto the sides of a mountain when i had the idea of making a map in SU, anyway, heres the result, tell us what you think. I personally think the eleveation colours thing works pretty well 🎉

        Hi Remus

        Was just wondering, Is the image you've shown the result of some analysis you carried out in SU ?? or an image taken from other software and applied to the terrain as a texture. Many Thanks as You responded to my post regards the potential measuring of gradients. TIGs script does the job nicly.
        I've been working alot with terrain and roads and wondered if your image was the result of gradient analysis.

          Basically all i did was to make a TIN (off the top of my head, its not based on anything real.) i then made a sort of grayscale pic in photoshop which i then projected on to the TIN. So in response to your question, it was done with a texture.

          Having said tta, im sure you could get a similar effect (if not better) by using planes at specified heights to intersect the TIN. This should allow you to mark specific heights very easily, which you could then colour using SU.

          I hope that makes a bit of sense 😛

            It would be curious to see topographical aplications of sketchup. I tried to import a cloud of points before, but I couldn't find a easy way of doing that and measure volumes.

              Im guessing you already know aobut didier's point cloud script?

              This is a very untested idea, but once you imported the cloud of points you could use a seires of planes to link up the points. Would be very labour intensive, but you should get a decent set of contours.

                Yes, I started to explore the script, but (forgive me if I don't remember details, it was an evening some months ago) I believe that I remember that the amount of points I can use (3.000-4.000) was too much for sketchup. Contouring it is a good idea. I think that there is some potential in sketchup in this area, but this is a software mainly used by architects, but not by engineers. Sketchup for me is a hobby... so I am not an architect 💚

                  Hmm, i wonder if there is a script out there that will automatically join all the points with the same z coordinates? Id imaigne this would make contouring a lot easier.

                    For me, contouring and volume measuerement would be interesting. There are some non sketchup free aplications (I am remembering one, in spanish only, sorry) that turn the points into contour lines and export the lines to dxf.

                    Another interesting aplication would be to import or draw the contour lines, to create a cloud of points based on the lines, and to export the points. Using a map as a basis to create the contour lines would be very interesting (raster to vect software, I believe they are called).

                      Ive done a bit of raster to vector conversion, and generally the results arent very acceptable, and that was with black and white images, i cant imagine how bad theyd be with colour maps!

                      On the other hand, i ahve imported a pic of a map in to SU before and traced over the contour lines. That worked pretty well, and if youve got a good pic you can drape it over the mesh very easily. If you had some known distances, i supose you could also do it to scale as well. or maybe just use GE 😛
