Today is my last day of vacation so I probably won't be posting any more concepts for a while. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I did this one - the front fenders were shaped using the subdivide & smooth script. Obviously, I need a lot more practice with that tool. All the other geometry was done "manually."

      Happy Sketching,

      Brad

. . . WIP . . . I usually don't build them using this technique but I guess it works okay . . . this one is very rough, but it's easy to align and smooth out the bumps using the scale tool . . .

Hey Ray or GreenToaster, do you know how to use that smooth function. It baffels me totally.

[1] select the geometry you wanna smooze
[2] with screen cursor over selected geometry, right click, pick "Soften/Smooth Edges"

Thanks for the help but I actually meant the one in the sand box (i thought you were talking about that one) πŸ˜‰

I don't use the sand box - I have cats and so, I stay away from sand boxes . . .

But really, I never use it - what does it do?

Its for making terrain and things in that form. you can make nice smooth tweaking

So, Ray, do you use it?

                Should I be using it?

Am I ever going to start detailing and rendering?

If you look at the low number of poly's in this model you can get an idea how fast it was created & edited . . . just another quick sketch . . .

                          Thanks - here ya go.

They're really sloppy - for example, the geometry on the "electric car" is messed up around the front wheels - I wasn't paying attention to details or consistent geometry but rather just trying to quickly jot down an idea. Also, on the "electric car", I used SketchyFFD for some shaping - I find it's usually quicker to do shaping manually - I prefer to have more control where FFD quite often wreaks havoc with the integrity of the geometry requiring lots of time to "fix" stuff so it'll be symmetrical, & so forth. It's fun to take this one and stretch the shapes to come up with wildly different looking cars (see image(s) attached below).

I think the last car has the potential for detailing - it could be "okay" I guess - just a quick concept.

I will look into vray - I guess there is a forum or some links - I know almost nothing about rendering software - is one higher recommended than the other (Kerkythea vs. vray)?

currently i use kerky and it gives pretty good results, but Vray is good 2 because it is implemented into sketchup and it would be good with your fast draft concepts

I just sent V-Ray an email inquiry - looks like the educational version is $250. If it's worth it I'll be happy to spend the bucks - I just know very little about this stuff and I don't want to spend government money on something that's really not necessary or best value.

We lease many seats of 3DS at school but I don't know how to use it - would that work well for our rendering needs? Doesn't Blender also do rendering? I need to figure out what options are available and how they compare in price & performance. Maybe someone has created a current matrix showing this information?

                                            Thanks,
