can anyone explain "tone mapping" or "tone mapped", this phrase has come up multiple times in this thread - is this software specific?

Google always helps me find answers to that sort of question... but just off the top of my head here...
Tonemapping = to manipulate the light and dark tones of your image to achieve a 'look' you want.

i guess i should have been more specific - ha! does this occur in the rendering program or is everyone here using a third party app to do this

In most render applications, you can adjust the tonemapping to some extend...
But this is a post process, which is usually made in another program like Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom, Gimp, Paint Shop Pro and similar image processing applications... πŸ˜‰

Another little 15sec animation, done at the end of my first day playing with Kerkeythea. Of course not as nice as kwistenbiebel's beautiful animation. This took two hours and a half in my old PC, should take 40 minutes in the cheapest Core i7.

Now I've been two days playing with Kerky. I now agree with the KT team, frederik... Simply powerful. Projector lights, Spherical backgrounds, Blurred reflections, Customized render size, Brushed metals, Soft shadows for Omni lights,
Smooth transition between cameras in animation, Built-in Tone-mapping, Several render methods to choose from... And instead of a steep learning curve, I found an infinite plane... πŸ˜‰

Great to see that you find KT easy to use... Cause it really is if you just get the basics... πŸ˜„

Looking forward to see more renders from you...! πŸ‘

mirjman, its pretty quick and easy, open in photoshop, create duplicate layer, on that duplicate layer I applied a radial blur filter twice (set at 100 and zoom),Then set the blending option for both layers to screen.
